Gary Schwantes is based in San Francisco, CA and has been a featured
woodwind performer with:
UltraWorld X-tet, Hip Bones, ACT, Pam Tillis, Gregory James, Lou
Harrison, Liu Weishan, Allen Ginsberg, John Cipollina, Dave Creamer,
Hank Ballard, Animal Vegetable Television, Peter Welker and Klezmania.
He has performed on numerous CDs, soundtracks, TV shows, commercials,
and Digital Media products, including releases by Hip Bones, Global
Echoes, the Discovery Channel, Warner Bros., Nature Company, Vince
Littleton, Broderbund, Living Books, The Invertebrates, Red Orb
Entertainment, Disney Channel, Jason Becker, Mattel, and the Flowing
Stream Ensemble.

He

and many others. He has received commissions and grants
from Meet
the Composer, ACT, S.F. Legion of Honor Museum, the Zellerbach
Foundation and Chinese Cultural Productions. He won the
Hollywood Dramalogue
Critics Award for music to accompany ACT's production of Eugene
O'Neill's "Marco Millions". Gary received an M.F.A.
in Electronic Music and the Recording Media from Mills
College, where
he studied composition with Lou Harrison and Anthony Braxton.
He studied sax with John Handy, Kirt Bradford and Anthony
Braxton,
and he studied Chinese bamboo flute with Hong Kong studio and orchestra
flutist Tsang Kee Man.
